gallery-2High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a fun form of cardiovascular training within a 30 minute time frame consisting of 10 to 30 intervals of 20 to 60 second bouts of activity. The routines use either body weight or assisted resistance exercises to increase aerobic fitness, burn fat and tone muscle in the most time-efficient way.

Now for the science bit…

The exercises should all be done at maximum intensity to achieve Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) which is commonly known as the ‘afterburn’. EPOC is when oxygen is used to replenish fuel stores, balance hormones, repair cells, oxidise built up lactic acid and ATP synthesis. EPOC works during the resting period after HIIT exercise and can exist for up to 16 hours post work out.

What are the benefits?

During EPOC your body utilises its fat stores hence why HIIT is a brilliant method of exercise to lose weight and tone up.

It’s a little known fact that two shorter HIIT sessions within the same day has a greater EPOC effect than one longer session due to the ‘afterburn’ effect resulting in more effective weight loss.
